Poe 1992

(Continued from Poe 1979, Pt. 7)

COLECAO OPERA BRASIL  10:  FILHO DO URSO
"METZENGERSTEIN"
     (IN COLOR  w/ English Translation)

Because of the nature of blogs, I've been attempting, with some difficulty, to process and post these stories in chronological order.  For once, I'm doing one deliberately out of sequence.

One of my favorite comics artists from Brazil has become Flavio Colin.  His career spanned over 40 years, and 3 or 4 drastically different styles.  He started out very much influenced by Frank Robbins, then began to slowly evolve his style into something genuinely UNIQUE.  I suppose the word that best describes the bulk of his later work is "cartoony", but unlike anything I've ever seen before.  The closest description I can come up with is, it reminds me a bit of what you'd get if you took the style used by Gamma Productions' animation studio in Mexico, and used it for graphic sex and horror.

Over the course of his long career, I've discovered that Colin did 4 POE stories-- in 3 completely different styles!  It's only been in the last few months that I finally managed to get my hands on his 1st ("Berenice", from 1962) and his 4th...

     "METZENGERSTEIN".

This was the 8th comics version of this story, following...
Youthful's CHILLING TALES #16 (Jun'53),
Master Comics' DARK MYSTERIES #23 (May'55),
Serg's 3 HISTOIRES EXTRAORDINAIRES (1968),
Skywald's SCREAM #9 (Sep'74),
Maisal's TERROR CLASICO MAISAL #2 (Jun 1 '77),
Paoline's IL GIORNALINO #19 (May 11 '80), and
Vecchi's ALMANAQUE DO TERROR #5 (Nov'82)
...the latter some 10 years earlier!

The story was done for Editora D-Arte's CALAFIO magazine, which ran from 1981 to 1992...  but the company closed up shop before the story saw print!  Some 10 years later, Colin passed away... and not long after, the story finally saw print in a trade paper-back collection of 6 of his stories.

I spent nearly 2 years searching online and downloading literally THOUSANDS of pages of Colin's art that had been posted on various blogs in Brazil, but to no avail.  This story was mentioned on a couple of websites, but proved so elusive,
I was forced to buy a copy of the book.  For all of those 2 whole years, I had been led to believe that due to some bizarre restrictions, one could not easily buy direct from outside of Brazil.  That proved to be erroneous, when I contacted the Ugra Press book store via their website, who had it posted for the cheapest price, and inquired if I could buy from them using Paypal, which they had listed on their page.  I COULD.  AND DID!!  Thus, COLECAO OPERA BRASIL #10 became the very 1st Brazillian comic in my entire collection!

As soon as the book arrived, I KNEW I would have to jump ahead of my intended schedule, and do this one as soon as the opportunity arose.

ENJOY!
