Poe 1968, Pt. 12

(Continued from Poe 1968, Pt. 11)

ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR  7
"ANNABEL LEE"

     (IN COLOR  w/ English Translation)

Editora Continental / Outubro / Taika were 3 names used by the same small publisher in Brazil.  The work of artists Jayme Cortez & Miguel Penteado, they produced some wonderful comics, many of them in the horror genre, each doing many gorgeous, stunning cover paintings!

I have discovered, between my own researches and the IMMENSE help of artist and fellow fan Toni Rodrigues, that Continental / Outubro / Taika during their run produced at least 25 POE adaptations-- MORE than Skywald or Warren !!  It's my intention to compile, clean up, TRANSLATE and COLOR every one of these for my POE blog project!!

ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #7, as it turns out, and not counting issue-long stories, was the 4th ALL-POE comic anthology, following Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #40 (Aug'47), CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #84 (Jun'51), and Dell's Poe's TALES OF TERROR (Feb'63), the last one 4 years earlier.  The next such book would be Gino Sansoni Editore's I CLASSICI A FUMETTI #17 (Sep'69), some 2 years later, followed by until Warren's CREEPY #69 (Feb'75), some 5-1/2 years after that!

Up last, and 21st in line from the publisher...

     "ANNEBEL LEE"

This was one of 8 POE stories that Toni Rodrigues e-mailed me hi-res scans of, all at the same!  I'd seen a page of it in a reprint, so it was a pleasure to get such good scans of the whole thing.

One of the more popular poems by Poe, it's surprising this wasn't done more often by this point.

This is the 3rd comics version of the story, following...
Reilly & Britton's THE RAVEN, ANNABEL LEE & THE BELLS (1910), and
Gilberton's CLASSIC COMICS #17 (Jan'44)
...the latter, some 24 years earlier!

The previous one is currently the EARLIEST Poe adaptation in this entire blog project that came from a "comic-book", instead of an "illustrated book"!

Once again, the art is by Ignacio Justo & his assistant "Edegar".  There was no mistaking it, as the way the girl was drawn was identical to their version of "BERENICE".

This was their 5th of 6 POE adaptations.  I'll say this... apparently "Edegar" didn't stay doing comics long after this.  It's almost a shame, because looking at this one, it's clear he was improving.  "ANNABEL LEE" was by far the best-looking of the comics stories he worked on.

When I processed this one (7-27-2016), it was the "FINAL" Poe adaptation I'd tackled from Editora Taika.  I knew for a fact there were a few more that had not surfaced yet, but until they did, this was it.  (The next 2 coming up were done a few months earlier.)  What a haul this has been!  (Intro text updated 12-18-2019)

ENJOY!

  1. Wow what gorgeous illustrations! I had no idea that there were graphic comics made of Poe's poetry .. how wonderful. Something good came out of the blogger glitch .. it was only because we both have the same problem with editing our posts (the stupid blank pages being created!) that I saw your blog link and got curious. Glad I did!
