Poe 1976, Pt. 4

(Continued from Poe 1976, Pt. 3)

ARCADE:  THE COMIC REVIEW  7
"THE INHERITANCE OF RUFUS GRISWOLD"

This is the 2nd story in a row that I will admit, up-front, is NOT a POE adaptation.  But I've decided to post it anyway.

The Print Mint was a publisher of underground comics, and also specialized in psychedelic posters.  ARCADE: THE COMIC REVIEW was an anthology showcasing underground cartoonists, which ran 7 issues from 1975-76.  The last issue contained the unusual 3-pager...

     "THE INHERITANCE OF HERBERT GRISWOLD".

Rufus Wilmot Griswold was an American anthologist, editor, poet, and critic.  After Poe's mysterious death in 1849, Griswold wrote an unsympathetic obituary. Claiming to be Poe's chosen literary executor, he began a campaign to harm Poe's reputation that lasted until his own death eight years later.

Manuel "Spain" Rodriguez was an American underground cartoonist.  He is known as the creator of TRASHMAN, and for the "political" leanings in his work.

At the moment, I've only been able to locate the 1st of the 3 pages of this piece.  Hopefully, they'll turn up.

This has been reprinted a number of times, though it's been tough nailing down the information, presumably because it's not an adaptation.

The problem with these books is, you have 4 different editions of "Volume 1", each one of which has somewhat-different contents.  Some websites have mentioned "Griswold", but others, even when every single Poe adaptation contained is listed and described in detail, don't.  So it's impossible for me to be sure at this minute which books it actually appears in, or not, without copies of the books in my hands.  So for now I'm just gonna post ALL 5 covers.

As a bonus, here's a page from a piece he did on Joseph Stalin in the same magazine...
As another bonus, here's a 1974 self-portait.
Finally, a photo of "Spain".
