Poe 1974, Pt. 2

(Continued from Poe 1974, Pt. 1)

SCREAM  5
"THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO"
     "THE CONQUEROR WORM"
          "THE HAUNTED PALACE"

Skywald Publications was the work of Sol Brodsky & Israel Waldman.  While they had a small run of color comics designed to imitate Marvel, their biggest output and claim to fame were their B&W "Horror-Mood" magazines, done very much in the mode of James Warren's CREEPY and EERIE.

Al Hewetson, a writer & editor, soon joined the company and eventually became full editor when Brodsky returned to MarvelHewetson determined to give Skywald's horror line a more "literate" feel than Warren's had, resulting in, among other things, no less than 19 Edgar Allan Poe adaptations between 1972-75.

Here we come to the 5th of these...

     "THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO".

This was the 8th comics version of this story, following...
EC's CRIME SUSPENSTORIES #3 (Feb-Mar'51),
Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #84 (Jun'51),
Continental's CLASSICOS DE TERROR #1 (1960),
Dell's Movie Classic TALES OF TERROR (Feb'63),
Warren's CREEPY #6 (Dec'65),
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICS DE TERROR #4 (1967), and
Mundial's MAESTROS DEL TERROR #1 (1970)
...the last one a mere 2 months earlier!.

This would be the 3rd of 3 consecutive Poe stories with art by Maro Nava.

This issue also contained a 2-page vignette that combined a pair of Poe poems-- "The Conqueror Worm" and "The Haunted Palace".  Thanks to American International Pictures' marketing department, there exists a pair of feature films with those titles, but which, arguably, have nothing whatsoever to do with the source material.  Oh well! At any rate, Skywald editor Al Hewetson decided to combine the two into a single piece, and as it takes up so little space, I saw no reason to set up a separate page for it.  Art is by Domingo Gomez...  whoever HE might be!

Eternity Comics, for a few years, was a very successful small publisher, who split their output between a number of original series, licensed series, and reprints of old comics.  This included quite of few of the Poe stories from Skywald!  "The Cask Of Amontillado" was reprinted here...

"THE OBLONG BOX"

Skywald Publications was the work of Sol Brodsky & Israel Waldman.  While they had a small run of color comics designed to imitate Marvel, their biggest output and claim to fame were their B&W "Horror-Mood" magazines, done very much in the mode of James Warren's CREEPY and EERIE.

Here we come to the 4th of these...

     "THE OBLONG BOX".

This was the 2nd comics version of this story, coming 29 YEARS after McComb's CROWN COMICS #1 (Spring'45).  Boy, it took long enough!

This would be the 2nd of 3 consecutive Poe stories with art by Maro Nava.

I imagine anyone reading this after having seen the American International Picture film with Vincent Price must have been surprised or confused, as that film has pretty much NOTHING to do with the original story.  By comparison, I've found 2 completely different radio adaptations, both of which managed to at least use the short story as their basis, while adding a lot of additional material on the way.  Be sure to check them out at the links at the bottom.

"THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER"

Skywald Publications was the work of Sol Brodsky & Israel Waldman.  While they had a small run of color comics designed to imitate Marvel, their biggest output and claim to fame were their B&W "Horror-Mood" magazines, done very much in the mode of James Warren's CREEPY and EERIE.

Here we come to the 3rd of these...

"THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER".

This was the 16th comics version of this story, following...
Charlton's YELLOWJACKET COMICS #4 (Dec'44),
Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #40 (Aug'47),
Register & Tribune's THE SPIRIT (Aug'48),
EC's THE VAULT OF HORROR #13 (Jun-Jul'50),
Prize's BLACK MAGIC #28 (Jan-Feb'54),
EC's TERROR ILLUSTRATED #1 (Nov'Dec'55),
Taika's ALBUM CLASSICOS DE TERROR #5 (1967),
Serg's 3 HISTOIRES EXTRAORDINAIRES (1968),
Warren's EERIE #20 (Mar'69),
Milano Libri's LINUS #50 (May'69),

EDAR's MINI TERROR #132 (May'69),
Gino Sansoni's I CLASSICI A FUMETTI #17 (Sep'69),
Ibero Mundial's DOSSIER NEGRO #17 (Jul'70),
Populares' EL MONJE LOCO #143 (August 23, 1970), and
Stowa Forlag's NOVA #2 (May'73)
...the last one 7 months earlier.

This would be the 1st of 3 consecutive Poe stories with art by Maro Nava.

As it happens, it was my friend Mike Cannon Jr. posting this story at The EERIE Fans of CREEPY - and all HORROR/MONSTER MAGS/COMICS Facebook group that inspired me to start this entire huge POE project in the first place!  I had been planning to follow up my Jules Verne postings with H.G Wells, before moving on to either Arthur Conan Doyle or Edgar Allan Poe... but I jumped on Poe instead.  While Mike posted images photographed by a cell-phone camera, I'm using instead much-higher quality SCANS made from my own collection-- incredibly, the first time in this massive project I've had to do so!!  I'm afraid these are from the 1989 Eternity reprint, so the actual reproduction quality may be lower than if I'd done scans from the original 1973 magazine... but, you do what you can.

After the 1960 Roger Corman / Richard Matheson / Vincent Price movie, and the 1981 Richard Corben adaptation, this is probably the 3rd version of this story I ever ran across.  ENJOY!

"THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM"

Skywald Publications was the work of Sol Brodsky & Israel Waldman.  While they had a small run of color comics designed to imitate Marvel, their biggest output and claim to fame were their B&W "Horror-Mood" magazines, done very much in the mode of James Warren's CREEPY and EERIE.

     "THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM".

This was the 9th comics version of this story, following...
Charlton's YELLOWJACKET COMICS #3 (Nov'44),
Gilberton's CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #40 (Aug'47),
Marvel's SPELLBOUND #2 (Apr'52),
Youthful's BEWARE #10 (Jun'52),
Ziff-Davis's NIGHTMARE #2 (Fall'52),
Continental's CLASSICOS DE TERROR #9 (1960),
Co-Operative's SUNDAY EXTRA (Apr'66),  and
Temporae's EL MONJE LOCO #40 (Sep 4, 1968)
...the last one 5 years earlier!

The art this time was by Ricardo Villamonte, who apparently came from somewhere in South America.  I mostly know him from work he did as an inker for both Marvel and DC.

Meanwhile, the unrelated cover painting is by Jose Miralles, who I feel is an amazing artist.  Oddly enough, doing an online search, the project he seems to be getting the most noteriety for right now is THE GOLDEN CHILDEN'S BIBLE.

You know, one thing I can't figure is the number of Skywald covers where the logo is shrunken.  Oh well!
