Jules Verne, Part 20

(Continued from Jules Verne, Part 19)

THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN NEMO
Episode 5  /  "MR. MALISON'S MANSION"

Now it gets complicated.  I had to do some research.  I used the search engine at the GCD site to locate all the remaining episodes, and found that the first 4 stories had all been reprinted in the Walt Disney's COMICS DIGEST anthology, out of sequence.  Following them, a new 5th episode made its debut, some 6 YEARS later.  It was only after completely cleaning up the scans, and then double-checking at both the GCD and Inducks sites that I realized there were actually 6 episodes, and I was missing the 5th one!  (The GCD does not have the 6th one listed at all-- but fortunately, the Inducks site does.)

At first, I thought the later ones might have been sitting around unpublished for several years, but on closer inspection of the art, I've come to the conclusion it was actually done NEW just for the digests.  Dan Spiegle's art, which I could barely recognize before, has noticeably evolved into the style I'm familiar with here, and, he's only using 4 panels per page, which to me, strongly indicates the story was created specifically for the smaller digest format.

Suffice to say, I'm rather proud at being able to re-present them here, all beautifully cleaned up, and in the proper sequence!

The shame is that, as far as I can tell, the last 2 Dan Spiegle episodes have never been printed in America in a regular, full-size comic-book.  Somebody who licenses Disney material should really look into correcting this.  I can easily picture a collection of all the Dell / Gold Key CAPTAIN NEMO material-- all 6 episodes by Dan Spiegle (clocking in at 60 pages plus covers) and the earlier 20,000 LEAGUES adaptation by Frank Thorne.  That would make a nice package, I think!  Until then, this blog will have to do.

THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN NEMO
Episode 4  /  "DR. NEPTUNE'S SEA MONSTERS"

Walt Disney's WORLD OF ADVENTURE ended with the 3rd quarterly issue.  Apparently, a 4th episode of The Adventures Of CAPTAIN NEMO had been produced at the time, and right on schedule (3 months later), it turned up as
a back-up feature in-- of all things-- a one-shot adaptation of "THE HORSE WITHOUT A HEAD", a TV-movie made for Walt Disney's WONDERFUL WORLD OF COLOR series.

2 minor changes set this one off from the previous episodes.  The word balloons have changed from rectangular to having rounded edges (like most "normal" word balloons), and, Dan Spiegle used no less than 4 "vertical" panels, something he'd only done once before (in episode 2).

Interestingly enough, the plot element about a scientist creating giant animals was also used in the 1961 Charles H. Schneer / Ray Harryhausen adaptation of Jules Verne's "THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND".  It was most definitely NOT part of the original Verne novel!

THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN NEMO
Episode 3  /  "THE MYSTERIOUS BIRDMAN"

Apparently, WORLD OF ADVENTURE didn't sell too well, as it ended with only
3 issues.  I can't help but wonder if it might have sold better if the covers had placed more emphasis on CAPTAIN NEMO and less on just about everything else.

THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN NEMO
Episode 2  /  "LIGHTNING JUSTICE"

The 2nd episode of "THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN NEMO" makes
use of the "lightning" gun seen-- but strangly enough, NOT used in the
"20,000 LEAGUES" film.  (I only noticed this oddity when processing the files
for the Jesse Marsh adaptation, and then watching the movie again!)  The weapon IS used in the 1961 Charles H. Schneer / Ray Harryhausen sequel, "THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND".  I only wish that film had actually used the
same version of "The Nautilus" seen in the 1954 Disney film.

The leader of the slavers in this story reminds me of Australian actor
Chips Rafferty, who played shady characters in a number of 1960s shows, including TARZAN and THE MONKEES.

Jules Verne, Part 16

(Continued from Jules Verne, Part 15)

And now, another feature I only found out about recently...

THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN NEMO !!

In 1963, Disney re-released their 1954 epic 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA.  I remember my father mentioning he & my mother went to see it at the Liberty Theatre only 2 blocks from here (now a clothing store), which must have been one of those nights they left my brother and I with a baby-sitter. To tie in with the film, Gold Key re-issued the Dell Comics adaptation by Frank Thorne.  However, in addition, Gold Key also published a 2nd tie-in comic, which acted as a prequel to the movie!

Cory Gross, at Voyages Extraordinaires, a blog devoted entirely to Jules Verne, has the following article posted...  (March 11, 2010)

Walt Disney's World of Adventure:  Captain Nemo

"While Walt Disney rarely revisited a franchise in feature film during his lifetime, his licencees were never so judicious. One such comic, published by Gold Key in 1963, was Walt Disney's World of Adventure. One of the recurring characters in WoA's pages was the infamous Captain Nemo!

This Nemo is somewhere between his cinematic persona and the rehabilitated version common elsewhere. The episodes tend to take place in 1866, several years before the events of the film. Therein they can be taken as a kind of prequel. And in them, Nemo is definitely friendlier as an avenger of evil and righter of wrongs. He is still a fearsome avenger though.

The folks at the Nautilus Submarine Model site have been kind enough to scan several of these stories and later ones from the Walt Disney's Comic Digest (one should also note that Gold Key published the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea movie comic in 1963 as well)."

Yes, oddly enough, the Nautilus Subarine Model site have what appears to be the entire run of The Adventures of Captain Nemo posted-- even though they have no information about it included whatsoever.

Further, I did some research at the Grand Comics Database site (GCD), including using their search engine, and discovered the Voyages Extraordinaires article was missing some key information, which I now have!

To begin with, there were at least 5 episodes.  However, Walt Disney's WORLD OF ADVENTURE only ran 3 issues, from April-October 1963 (cover dates).  The 4th episode appeared in the back of-- I'm, not kidding-- a TV-movie tie-in comic, THE HORSE WITH NO HEAD (Jan'64), which ran in 2 parts on Walt Disney's WONDERFUL WORLD OF COLOR tv program.  Sometime later, Gold Key's anthology Walt Disney COMIC DIGEST, reprinted the first 4 episodes, in random issues, and out of sequence-- before finally publishing a new 5th episode, some 6 years after the previous one!

I now have ALL of these, and will be re-posting them here once I've cleaned them up better.

At the moment, I have no information as to who wrote these stories.  However, the art on all of them was by DAN SPIEGLE.  I became a fan of his for his run of BLACKHAWK with writer Mark Evanier in the early 1980's. I later found he also did HOPALONG CASSIDY, SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON (no relation whatsoever to Irwin Allen's LOST IN SPACE), and the MAJOR MATT MASON coloring book, among countless other projects.  It's going to be a pleasure posting this material!
